We are permanently out of stock of our balance shaft units. Within this listing we offer a "DIY FIX" only. See video below.
This DIY fix includes:
* Stainless-Steel M14, 40mm long bolt with a hexagon through-hole.
* Cr-Mo hexagon pin
Price of this DIY fix is £39.99 + postage. This DIY fix kit does NOT include balance shaft!
You will need to find a machine-shop near you and ask them to tap an M14 thread inside the end of your faulty unit.
DO NOT TRY TO DRILL OR TAP THIS THREAD MANUALLY! If the thread is not true (straight) you will ruin your entire shaft!
Tapping process MUST BE DONE on lather or milling machine!
If you find this page you and your car are probably affected the by the 2.0 TDI balance shaft common failure.
VW/Audi started to use this weak/ under engineered oil pump drive system from 2005.
The problem is caused by many things but mainly under-engineering this system.
Balance shaft chain driven crank sprocket which was used between 2005 and 2007. The crankshaft sprocket drives the balance shaft sprocket through a chain system and its tensioner.
After some time the balance shaft tensioner either brakes or the crankshaft sprocket rounds off. It will cause a sudden oil pressure loss and results a major engine job.
The older tensioner and chain driven system later on in 2007 has be updated to a newer (but not necessarily better) gear driven system. Although the newer gear driven balance shaft gives better reliability but it didnt completely eliminate the problem which was caused by the weak hexagon key drive.
Older chain driven and newer gear driven systems use the same 77mm long hexagon key drive. This small shaft drives the oil pump. This small hex drive was still causing problems in the newer gear driven balance shaft.
The shorter 77mm key drive and/or the balance shaft rounds off some time resulting the same oil loss problem. (This is when we laugh at the often referred "German engineering" Obviously people who often glorify "German engineering" have never had Passat or A4 2.0 TDI PD)
Pre-failure of the short hexagon key drive in the balance shaft:
Famous "German engineers" needed other 5 years to realize the shorter hex key just cannot handle the job to drive a simple pump and a third version of this oil pump/balance shaft module.
The third version of the oil pump drive came out in 2010 with the newer 2.0 TDI (common rail) engines.
These cars have the better gear drive + the longer 100mm key drive. It gives better reliability but even with these upgrades the balance shaft and its hexagon pin WILL FAIL.
To summarize all this above. There are 3 types of balance shaft in these VW and Audi models:
Chain Driven: (Module casting number 03G103535B V200, V300)
Production Period: 2005-2007
(Mainly in VW Passat 2.0 TDI PD engines)
Engine codes:
Audi: BLB, BPW, BNA, BRF
VW Passat: BKP, BMA, BMP, BHW
Gear Driven: (Module casting number 03G103535B V410)
Production Period: 2007-2010
Engine codes:
Audi: BRD, BVG, BVS, BBA, BRE
VW Passat: BRT, BUZ, BMR
Gear Driven: (newer common rail engines)
Production Period: 2010-2016
Engine codes:
Audi: CAGA, CAHA, CAGB, CAHB, CMEA
VW : CBAA, CBAB, CBBB, CBAC, CCHA, CCHB, CFCA
You will often find sellers selling "remanufactured" balance shafts. There balance shafts failed once and this service works on exchange bases. You will need to send deposit on to of the replacement item and you will need to send your old faulty balance shaft.
In our website we offer you a balance shaft F"IX kit" which has been manufactured in Germany. Quality German import part.
Using our FIX the depth of the hex key hole will be increased from 24mm to 40mm and we use a chrome-vanadium hex insert for better reliability.
Some of the VW 2.0 TDI balance shafts have 77mm hex key and some have 100mm. In ALL of our balance shafts we use 100mm hex key and all are interchangeable with your old unit.
*No need to send us your faulty balance shaft! NO EXCHANGE NEEDED!
*No waiting!
*No deposit!
*No hassle!
*Improved design!
*2 years warranty!
You just need to select the right type of your 2.0 TDI PD balance shaft above the "ADD TO CART" button and pay. All parts are usually dispatched the next day!
If you don't know which type of Audi A4 or VW Passat balance shaft you have then please contact us with your chassis number via our contact form here: Contact Us
If you have chain driven balance shaft it is worth changing the crankshaft sprocket. Ours is superior to the other cheaper Chinese units. Its lightweight design puts less friction and stress to your oil pump drive. It is only included if you add this option at ADD TO CART.
You will receive this kit if you add an oil pump and a "chain tensioner set" above add to cart. Don't add tensioner set if you have the gear driven system!
